November Meeting
The November meeting will be an open spin. We’ll have a business meeting and Show and Tell, and update you about the beading workshop, clothing order, and other things going on.
We thought we’d plan a skein painting day for either the May or June meeting, so we might be able to be outside. At the November meeting I’ll have 4 oz. balls of Merino top you may purchase from me for $5.00 each (I only have 20 balls, so one to a customer please), which will give you a nice skein to dye, or you can use your own white or light colored fiber to spin for the project.
You should have your dues paid by the November meeting to get your name on our membership list, which will be distributed at the January meeting. Checks should be made payable to Linda Miller, and can be mailed to her at 8487 Dunham Road, Baldwinsville, NY, 13027, or given to an officer at the meeting. Some have asked if the membership list is published on the website – it is not, because the blog is not secure.
Food for thought – the current officer terms will expire as of the June meeting, 2014. The president, vice-president, and secretary/newsletter positions will be open. Please consider how you might be able to help.
October Meeting Notes
Clothing order – women’s sizing is available for the fleece jackets, but not the vests. Sizing for women is also available for the tees and sweatshirts. We’re looking into the availability of denim shirts as well.
Sign-up for the February beading class will end in November so there is time to order beads and other equipment. We think the materials fee will be in the $10 range, and will confirm that as soon as possible. Members can pay the fee in January when the beads are distributed.
The charka class fees will be $30 each for the workshop, and $20 each for the materials fee. The members voted to go forward with the planning – probably for April or May. We’ll need to start a sign-up at the November meeting. The plan is to have the workshop fee paid by the guild, and the materials fee paid by the member.
The 2014 CNY Fiber Frolic is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2014, once again at Beaver Lake Nature Center. Sign-ups for guild member help at the event will begin at our January meeting. We also talked about the space constraints in the large room, and hope to adjust the floor plan to make room for an additional vendor space. Some things discussed included increasing the vendor fee, creating a vendor space for the guild, rotating vendors in the future, and providing spinning and/or knitting lessons.
Patterns were distributed for the afghan square of the month. Each month there will be one or two new patterns distributed, and the squares completed by the next meeting (hopefully!). If you have not been able to attend the meetings, but want to participate, please call or email Gail Roemer so she can get you on the sign-up and get you the patterns.

September Meeting Notes
It was so good to see everyone again after the summer break, and especially good to see some members returning after several years. We welcomed some new members also. We have a wonderful group of people with diverse talents to share, and we encourage everyone’s ideas and input so your guild is what you want it to be. Welcome!!
Dues reminder: Our guild year runs from September to June, with dues staying at $20 again this year. Please be sure to have them paid no later than the November meeting. Checks should be made payable to Linda Miller, and can be mailed to her at 8487 Dunham Road, Baldwinsville, NY, 13027, or given to her, or her representative, at the October or November meetings. (Linda M. has reported that our bank balance is $4550.91.)
After October 5th, sign-ups for the Rhinebeck bus trip no longer include an admission ticket, but you can still join us. Members (as of June 1, 2013) pay $25; other pay $60. Contact Linda Lupole ASAP if you want to register – 315-427-2929; [email protected]. If you have already signed up, you’ll get a reminder email confirming departure times, etc.
We started taking orders for guild shirts, totes, etc. We can order additional colors as long as the logo color stays the same. We’re also checking on women’s sizing in addition to the generic sizing we currently use. We’ll continue taking orders at the next couple of meetings.
It’s time to renew the Spin-Off subscription for the Baldwinsville library – the membership approved the expenditure. Instead of ordering Spin-Off for the guild library, the membership approved a motion to order the new magazine for handspinners, PLY Magazine.
We talked about our fatally damaged guild tents again. Linda Miller and Betsy Walker are trying to determine if we can use the framing from our old canopy style tents with the waterproof covers from the damaged EZ-Ups. It was previously reported that the framing from both EZ-Ups is damaged beyond repair. It was suggested that we may want to just rent a tent, since the only event we need it for is the Golden Harvest Festival. The issue was tabled for discussion until we get a status report from Linda Miller.
The 2014 CNY Fiber Frolic is scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2014, once again at Beaver Lake Nature Center. The officers will get the ball rolling by contacting vendors, and we should have our final vendor roster sometime in December. Sign-ups for guild member help at the event will begin at our January meeting. The membership also approved an expenditure to purchase two large event signs to install each year on the large Beaver Lake Nature Center road sign on Route 370 at the entrance to East Mud Lake Road.
Our bead knitting workshop will be in February. We haven’t had any luck finding the beads locally, so we’re planning to do a group order. The plan is to have the beads available at the January meeting. Sign-ups were started in September.
A note was received from the Fingerlakes Fiber Festival thanking us for our participation as demonstrators again this year. Thank you Meg Welch, Joyce Lock, Jill Robinson, and Gail Roemer for helping staff our booth.
Gail is going to follow up with a woman who gives workshops on spinning on a Charka. A show of hands at the meeting indicated interest in the program, so stay tuned for additional information at the October meeting.
Gail presented a guild project idea for the year, which is an afghan square of the month – organized so that by the June picnic participants will have completed their afghan for Show and Tell. Each month there will be one or two new patterns distributed, and the squares completed before the next meeting. Sign-ups were started and the September pattern distributed. If you were not able to attend in September, but want to participate, please call or email Gail so she can get you on the sign-up and get you the September pattern.
Jill mentioned that she has several instructional spinning DVDs that she can share via her laptop at some of our meetings if there is interest.

Our guild was well represented this year. I guess maybe the guild challenge helped motivate us.
June Meeting Notes
We had another very enjoyable picnic at the Clark’s home. Thanks again, Michelle!
The silent auction was a success. Proceeds will be put toward a memorial bench in the new wool building at the fairgrounds.
A donation in memory of Walt Thomas was discussed and agreed that that would also go toward a memorial bench in the wool building. An amount for donation will be discussed and acted upon at a later date when we have a better handle on costs.
We discussed the policy of contributing 10% of Market Day sales to the guild treasury. The consensus was that the present policy should be enforced uniformly, and not revised.
The bus is reserved for Saturday, October 19th to the NYS Sheep and Wool Festival. Motion was made and approved for the advance of funds to pay for the bus. Members’ registration with payment was due to Linda Lupole by July 31st. Registration will be open to non-members on August 1st. Members (as of June 1, 2013) are paying $25, and the non-member fee is $60; both fees include the admission ticket. NOTE: There is still room on the bus – register at the meeting.
We will be doing another clothing order. We are looking into the possibility of offering different color(s) for shirts and sweatshirts. Please be thinking about what items you might like. Jill hopes to be able to report a time frame and updated pricing for the order at the September meeting
We talked about the beaded knitting class offered by Jean Tyo. In anticipation of this class being presented during our 2013-2014 meeting schedule, Jean offered a few tips on supplies for the class. She advised that the Gem and Mineral Show, usually held at the Fairgrounds, is a great place to purchase better quality hanks of beads (beads on a string) for knitted items. The beads should be size 10 or 12. She advised that we would need 7 hanks of beads for a large bag, and one hank of beads for a small bag (about the size of an amulet). She also suggested #8 purl cotton for the knitting yarn. Further details for needles and other supplies will follow when we have a schedule for the class.
